Ultimate Medical Academy Basic X-Ray Technician Program Courses
Course Objective
To train individuals for entry level employment as a Basic X-Ray technician, either with prior medical training, or without, a comprehensive classroom to clinical setting study course in Basic Radiological Technology. Students will be taught, by A.R.R.T. standards, the fundamentals of Radiological Technology. The scope will be limited, as set forth by the Basic X-Ray Machine Operator guidelines. The course will prepare students to take the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Radiology Basic X-Ray Machine Operator Exam and entry level employment in this field.
The Basic X-Ray Technician program provides 173 hours of theory and 287 hours of laboratory instruction with an additional 240 hours of clinical externship in a health care setting. Classes will be available for both daytime and evening attendance.

Curriculum Outline
Module 1:
Patient Care & Management
The student will be taught proper ways to locate and identify the patient in all types of settings. Patient confidentiality and medical legal issues will be discussed with emphasis on the importance of professional behavior and conduct at all times. The student will be taught monitoring of vital signs, proper body mechanics and transfer techniques for any given circumstance, as well as how to recognize an emergency and initiate the correct action.
Module 2:
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Lecture will include how x-rays are produced, what constitutes “safely operating equipment”, how to proceed during system failures, as well as equipment maintenance. MSDS, OSHA requirements, and dealing with emergencies, such as fire and electrical hazards will be covered.
Radiation Safety & Protection
This course will identify safety precautions in radiology for the student/operator, the patient, and the general public. The dangers of irradiating patients by untrained personnel will be discussed in depth. The biological and genetic hazards to living things and the effects of radiation will be addressed. Students will be taught how to protect themselves in this occupation, the function and principles of the “lifetime permissible dose”, and the importance of film badge or other monitoring exposure throughout their career.
Module 3:
Anatomy & Physiology
Lecture includes basic anatomy and physiology with a focus to those areas addressed by the Florida statutes, which limit the scope of practice of a Basic X-Ray Machine Operator (BXMO). Foreign body identification and localization, patient concerns, and special needs will be presented in this section.
Positioning & Procedures
Lecture will include proper radiological procedures, patient positioning and “hands on” training, utilizing non-radiation-emitting radiographic equipment. The students will position each other to learn anatomical “landmarks” used in radiology. Specific attention will be afforded to misconceptions about simply “capturing” an image on film versus a “true A.R.R.T. acceptable” study. The students will be given an opportunity to view “normal and abnormal” X-Ray studies as well as “suboptimal” procedures. Instruction in techniques used to obtain optimal images will be demonstrated in detail, as well as methods that can be employed to provide a satisfactory result.
Exam & Externship Prepartion
A complete review of the course and preparation for externship with discussion of the different specialty areas in which a BXMO might choose to practice and the student conduct expected in each environment. Students will be prepared to take the Florida Department of Health (Bureau of Radiation Control) Basic X-Ray Machine Operator exam.
CPR & First Aid For Healthcare Providers
if not currently certified.) All students will complete the American Saftey and Health Institute approved CPR course for health care providers and demonstrate the correct procedures for performing CPR, rescue breathing, and choking maneuvers on adults, infants and children. Provides the student with a ACHI Certificate.
HIV/AIDS Education Training
(Required or proof of core training) Detailed instruction on the transmission, prevention and clinical management of HIV/AIDS. It also discusses infection control, confidentiality, current Florida laws and testing.
Module 4:
Clnical Externship
Students will be assigned to a health care facility under supervision. The clinical externship will take place at a local health care facility chosen by the school staff. There is no financial reimbursement for student participating in clinical externship. The clinical externship is purely a learning experience.
**Clock hours for CPR & HIV training are included in the 700 for the program.
