Massage Therapy Program Courses


Course Objective

To train individuals for entry level employment as a Massage Therapist Training will prepare students to design & implement massage sessions, maintain a wellness program for clients or begin their own massage therapy business. Students will be taught about human anatomy & physiology. Students will learn the Basic Therapeutic Applications of Massage and theory & practice of allied therapeutic modalities.

The Massage Therapy Program provides 550 hours of classroom and laboratory training, followed by 200 hours of facility supervised internship.

Program Description

  • Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 6:00PM to 10:00PM
  • Length:
    • 7 months classroom / internship hours – Days (or)
    • 11 months classroom / internship hours (12.5 weeks) of clinical internship – Nights or week-ends

Module 1:

MT001- Introduction to Massage Therapy

Covers role and responsibilities of the massage therapist. Lecture will discuss career possibilities within the health-care industry and private practice. Course will provide an overview of personal qualifications and certification requirements. Students will discuss the history, effects, benefits, and procedures of massage.

Students will identify safety precautions necessary for the therapist, patient, and general public; while learning the importance of proper positioning, lifting, and body mechanics. Will discuss infection control including equipment and facility maintenance. The use of Universal Precautions will be stressed; will focus on specific issues encountered in the massage industry.

MT012- Sports/Healing Massage

Covers overview of Trigger Point, Myofascial Release, Medical Massage and Sports Massage techniques to be integrated into the previously learned Swedish basic massage module. An introduction to basic pathological and physiological effects of massage will assist the MT in a more adequate assessment of the client’s needs in order to assess fair and adequate treatment plans.

MT002- Medical Ethics and Legal Issues for the Massage Therapist

Covers professionalism and legal Issues for an MT, students will cover issues such: scope of practice, code of ethics, credentialing and licensing, laws and regulations. Additionally in this module MT’s will be exposed to preparation for post graduate job placement skills, to include but not limited to writing resumes, mock job interviews, business planning for self-employment, and time management skills.

MT008- CLINICAL PATHOLOGY FOR THE MASSAGE THERAPIST

Covers the basic academic theory necessary to perform Swedish massage as it applies to both pregnant women and elderly/geriatric clients, focusing specifically on range of motion in specific body regions as well as pressure of touch issues, for both pregnant clients and those over 65yrs old. Will introduce students to common impairments encountered by massage therapists, and discuss signs/symptoms, relevant anatomy, and functional limitations associated with the conditions. Students will learn to evaluate patients/clients and plan an appropriate treatment. Students will develop necessary skills to make effective decisions when considering the use of massage

This module is designed to provide the MT with an overall understanding of the skills involved with many Spa treatments such as Hydrotherapy, Cryotherapy, Thermotherapy, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, ect. Students will expand their knowledge and practice of massage techniques. Training may include reflexology, and polarity as well as Reiki, acupressure, and energy balancing. Students will continue to practice in groups

CC 005 CPR AND FIRST AID FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

(Required if not currently certified) All students will complete the American Saftey and Health Institute approved CPR course for healthcare providers and demonstrate the correct procedures for performing CPR, rescue breathing, and choking maneuvers on adults, infants and children. This will provide the student with an ASHI certificate.
